Cmon. Nobody has relentlessly attacked the press like he has. Let’s not pretend for a second.
-
The question of whether anyone has relentlessly attacked the press "Like he has" is different than whether the press has been relentlessly attacked. Trump is amping up the rhetoric but this isn't born in far right ideology, as his statements about Mexicans or Muslims might be.
-
He is strategically dehumanizing them...this is not mere complaints.
-
We're not in disagreement on that.
-
This is an entirely new level of attack...stop minimizing it.
-
I'm not minimizing it. Or employing false equivalency. No other president has referred to the press as the enemy of the people. But Trump's success at selling this idea was enabled by 40 years of increased cross party hostility towards the press.
-
that's not entirely true, a lot of presidents have feuded with the press, like JFK and Jefferson, but Nixon called the press "the enemy".
-
You are right about Nixon.

No, Trump is the one who called for a war against the Press! Be honest and stop pretending that he isn't at fault for his own Words. He hated the press from beginning of his candidacy and even More Now as POTUS.
-
Where did I say he is "not at fault?" I did not say that. I said simply that he's not the first politician to lean on hatred towards the press. Does the right do it more than the left? Without a doubt. But it's an argument that plays to the center and wins them swing votes.
-
How come you won’t give us a little evidence of Dems hating on the press? People keep asking and you keep running.
-
Why would I have to thank, Obama? Did he call for violence, inciting hate, riots, accused innocent of crimes, denied people of their due process, or said lock up protesters? Please help me understand the correlation here? Let's be clear.
-
They obviously couldn't be bothered to read the article presented by a perfectly reasonable person that is trying to have an actual dialog instead of an emotional temper tantrum everyone else is having. Twitter truly is the ruin of civilization
-
Yeah, welcome to the internet.
-
I read it. And you’re still wrong. But you work for NYT. Maybe you should go interview some Trump supporters about how they feel about this?

I think 'escalated' might be a bit of an understatement.
-
You know what, Josh. I think that as a person who doesn't work as a reporter at a newspaper, use whatever language works for you. But Trump didn't get elected b/c newspaper reporters used words like falsehoods instead of lies.
-
You're right that you have a direct and unique perspective. But - especially in light of today - we can't risk downplaying how uniquely dangerous this rhetoric has been. It's scary stuff and should be called out as such. While taking the concrete steps you recommend.
