That was before Maastricht, and before the majority of member states joined the Euro. Massive centralisation of power which marginalised the UK.https://twitter.com/thegistofit/status/995249215038218243 …

@PhilipDaviesUK General Election is looming because 10 remainersin the Commons will not stand up to lords ! Any GE needs new leadership! Dont get carried away with local election and opinion polls! That happened last year. Manifesto on abolition of House of Lords is only answer!

Indeed. It is an interesting "What if?..." question as to whether Maastricht Treaty would have received UK assent, if Mrs T had still been in office as it (& Lisbon) were nodded through?...

Better to have power in EU than with Brexshiters like you. FFS think about the UK for once rather than the Tories.

Actually, Maastricht failed to centralise enough power - partly because of the Brits. That’s why the euro is still unfinished business.

In a letter to the Financial Times in April 1997 Thatcher clarified her thinking on the Maastricht treaty during a House of Lords debate in July 1993. Thatcher had told peers: “The majority of our people want Britain to be in Europe, and so do I.”

I’m confident MARGARET THATCHER would have stood up to the unelected EU BULLY BOYS and handbagged us out of their giant federal experiment. Well done the Conservatives for keeping up the fight.

Bernard It is exactly what Ted Heath said it would be in 1973, as well you know. You can't use that excuse. "The Common Market is just the first step towards a community of collective human endeavor" https://twitter.com/EmporersNewC/status/971368475422789633 … #PeoplesVote

That’s wilfully ignoring what she said after, it’s like saying “when she wasn’t PM her views don’t count” from the same people wheeling out Major and Blair to support their cause. Maddening inconsistency.
