MPs do not have 'legal veto' to stop no-deal Brexit, Commons officials say | The Independent. They have no "legal veto". They rely on the good faith of the Government which granted a meaningful vote, and the hope that even Brexit ideologues would not betray the interests of their country. One of the alleged objectives of Brexit was to return power to Parliament.

And 17.4 million voters relied on "Brexit means Brexit" and "No Deal better than Bad Deal." That was the contract and demanding it is honoured does not make anyone of them an "ideologue"; it make them a democrat. HTH

It was 17.4m in 2016. How many now that they realise they were conned by a posh Brexit elite? Hammond made a strong case for a People's Vote now:https://youtu.be/SgVmUWwbcRA

That is a circular argument because a great many who voted to Remain have now changed their minds and want to leave. You cannot run any democracy by constantly revisiting polls that produced a definite result. You have to live with it.

Also love the Remainer line that Brexit is the will of the posh British elite! The mass majority of the 'Elite' supportted Remain. You think that Brexiters are thick & gullible & assume we'll believe obvious nonsense. We aren't, and don't.

The majority of MPs voted remain and whilst many have voted based on their constituency voting since, this deal via the gives them the opportunity to vote remain again so I am expecting MPs to reject any deal regardless which will lead to a seismic shift at next election.

Mmm well there is a long lag in the system and most MPs are elected on Party loyalties. In many areas a Labour MP could be worse than Trump and still get elected because a labour MP is always returned. Same for conservatives Very small number of people have real democratic power

What is far more important is... What happens NEXT, if we fail to get withdrawal agreement?.. Who takes control of daily decisions, and can opposition MPs stand in the way of getting all the temporary arrangements up and running, to ensure the country keeps operating?

What happens next? The House of Commons would want to win a vote of confidence against the Government but they’d need conservatives to turn against their own party. If no vote or government win then it’s no deal and government continues to run country

Parliament is sovereign. Parliament can do anything it wishes if a majority of members thus vote. That's what parliamentary sovereignty means. Government is not the supreme power of the land. Parliament is. Sorry Bernard, but you don't understand our constitution.

No, Parliament has to act within the law. Gina Miller showed that is the case, and it is she that has guaranteed the legitimacy of a no Brexit deal

Yes, Parliament has to act within the law - as long as it wants to keep the said law. But if Parliament decides to change the law, that is within its gift. Nobody can bind the Parliament, not even an earlier act of Parliament, because it is sovereign.

That would be good news if only I could believe that sufficient MPs were honourable enough to reject the proposed Chequers deal or similar which will simply enslave the UK in a EU designed trap in perpetuity. No Deal may not be perfect but surely far better than that.
