I agree with a lot of this. But the EU is not going to let us keep the transition but drop the Irish backstop. We will need a different Withdrawal Agreement and a different halfway house. We've forgotten about
#Gibraltar our other land border. GFA is an international agreement. Do we just walk away from our responsibilities in case it upsets a few Tory voters? Brexit is a badly implemented bad idea splitting the country. Time to step back and re-think. -

The backstop is a contingency in case we leave the Implementation Period with no final settlement. If we rejoin EFTA & stay in EEA no need for backstop and a CU not required.
