An extraordinary statement which says so much. Even a negotiated agreement which is better for all nation states making up the EU is not acceptable. It has to be worse, because as you say the EU oligarchy has to show to the other truculent members that this is a punishment deal.

How can you build a better form of cooperation that starts by withdrawing from the institutions that facilitate it? Nobody has articulated a credible option that would be "better for all nation states making up the EU". Barnier's comment is verging on a statement of the obvious.
-
I think the point is the other way round - even if the result of, say, the trade talks, is a thoroughly workable and sensible scheme in everyone's interest, there is a suspicion that this would be subordinated to a deal which left the UK (and others) worse off, as as a symbol.
-
Essentially we have a choice between being worse off economically or worse off politically. That's always been the only choice, not because of the "EU oligarchy" but by the nature of what it is we are giving up.
-
Not sure the two are mutually exclusive, but it is a point well made. I guess the question then boils down to what is more important, political freedom or the comfort that the EU may bring to economic well being.
-
Less comfort, more lack of disaster. This may help you understand.https://twitter.com/tfoale/status/1014769553480527872?s=19 …

And this. Did you really vote leave to make the rich richer and the poor poorer? Because that's actually why the EIA and TPA want Brexit.pic.twitter.com/1UsXCnDSl4
-
An interesting analysis. You demonstrate in your graph how the rich have got richer etc during the time we were in the EU and then seem to want to use it as proof of what leaving the EU would entail. IMO it demonstrates little, but surely it should be the other way round for you?

We ALL make mistakes! Takes a big person to put his/her hands up and say - "Oops, got that badly wrong, SORRY!" Do we want to be BIG or do we crave sub-average? Our choice!

Well, if this strong, independent, sovereign nation can be bullied by the club it is a member of, God help us when we go to the table with United States. Or China!
-
Not "bullied". Like saying "I want to leave the club. I'm going to stop paying my subscriptions. Oh no the won't let me use the facilities any more! They are bullying me!"
-
Tesco bully me every week by demanding that I pay for the food I wish to take from their store.

Do you really believe that a non-member should enjoy the same benefits as members?
-
They do and furthermore they believe we should enjoy them for free and with none of the attendent responsibilities, and, moreover, that Johnny Foreigner should consider it a privilege to comply.

The EU is a 40-year old jigsaw puzzle of trade integration. It has little flexibility to adapt for the UK, largely because of 70+ FTAs with MFN clauses which would need renegotiation if the EU diverged from its carefully-worked-out legal structure.pic.twitter.com/aXk3BuE0w5

It's just a shame that we are currently led by such incompetent, egotistical dullards unable to cope with anything remotely as complex as the EU.

No. He simply states reality. UK cannot expect a deal as good as present full membership with all of UK bells and whistles. Do not try to blame the mess on EU if you are party to creating the mess.

You silly sausage, Bernard. All Barnier is saying is that the EU won't change a winning formula just to suit the UK.
-
Winning formula! any idea of the national debts across the EU, banking debts across Periphery EU, high unemployment rates across EU ex Germany, the anaemic growth? Are you aware of the wars going on in EU due to influx of migrants. If this is a winning formula, we are all doomed!
-
Perhaps you nought to look at the US national debt. I live in the EU27 and you sound remarkably like the bog standard racist liar we are all at war with in the EU 27.
