I agree with that. My comment was that he is the clear front-runner, so the decision today seemingly determines which way the election will go. Not an endorsement for Lula, just a reality check for what could be a seriously fragmented left if he is convicted.

As for the “coup,” I think Dilma’s ousting amounts to an internal coup. I quoted Dilma as saying Lula’s trial is the next stage in the coup—we can’t be sure, since we don’t know the evidence for the trial. If it turns out to be nothing, then there could be some merit to that.

(To clarify, I’d call it a soft coup. Though technically legal, those bringing the (somewhat bogus) charges were far more culpable)
