How much better off would Guatemala be had Arbenz continued Arevalo's reforms and not moved ahead w/ more controversial land reform in 1952?
@CentAmPolMike as if that'd have placated US opposition to a reformist government. How much better off would it be had there been no coup?

@bernajurema US put up w/reformist govs in Costa Rica & Bolivia at same time, even pushed back against UFCO calls for coup until land reformThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@bernajurema the coup was terrible but since others were writing their what ifs, I thought I would add a different one -
@CentAmPolMike Get your point but seems classic blame the victim to question Arbenz legitimate policies as cause of 1954. CIA is the cause. -
@bernajurema In some ways yes, but a president's actions have consequences; in this case, the consequences were known ahead of time -
@CentAmPolMike consequences were not known; Guate coup inaugurated an era. Cuba learned lesson of how to avoid US meddling. No? -
@bernajurema Consequences of land reform (US-backed coup) were highly likely; I don't think coup happens without land reform -
@CentAmPolMike given land structure was (still is) one of key problems of Guate, how reformist would a govt be without addressing it? -
@bernajurema Obviously timing matters, need to be right at right time; Arbenz risked all the Ten Years of Spring advances on the land reform
