        If racial liberalism is "the basic consensus that existed across the mainstream of both political parties since the 1970s", is the basic, vexing problem today that these two political parties no longer are in any way representative of the mainstream?

        One can also say the struggle is mostly defined as rural vs. urban America.

        That’s not true, unless you count as “culturally rural” people who live in a cities with ”only” a million; in fact, more than half of Americans live in conurbations of 1.3m people or larger, and 82% of the country is “urban” according to @uscensusbureau https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_statistical_areas ….

        I do not disagree with your fact. I'm referring specifically to voting patterns. There are more Republicans in California (most happen to live in rural part of CA) than the greater majority of any other state. Yet votes overwhelmingly Democrat as a state.
