There is a push towards forcing users to provide information without a technical need for said info. User can "choose" to not use the service or give up their data, but IRL most users to not understand or realize the ramifications and click ok.

IMHO this is best solved by government regulations; we cannot realistically expect everyone to constantly be aware of privacy leaks when they simply want to chat, shop, or search stuff online... if you offer something for "free" it should come *without any hidden costs*.
