The fact that this story proves the AIVD is clearly capable of doing its job under current laws is conveniently not mentioned. To me this looks more like political propaganda to than a real "leak".

But did they really? My understanding was that AIVD gave intel to US intel community, someone there blabbed, it ended up in the press => AIVD goes “fuck it, we’re burned anyway now, might as well take credit for it.”
-
I'm that case the story should be "we can no longer trust the US with secrets, we need to have more power to go it alone". That would make more sense then "we are functioning really well but we must have more power to function well".

Either way, what the AIVD/MIVD really, really need is proper funding and the ability to pay wages at industry standards. It's a specialist area; success depends almost entirely on the abilities of individuals. Helping your country should not mean taking a massive pay cut.
-
Full ack on both counts. The wage problem seems to be common across (almost?) all services however. That's why they all end using a ton of contractors...
-
Yeah, well unfortunately they can't seem to figure out the paperwork needed to hire contractors in the Netherlands... I am not kidding.
