There have been silly bugs found in firewalls, etc., so your point is moot. All software has bugs, even the security software.

wouldn't this suggest need for e.g. Owasp ASVS for AV, not variation on "Police is corrupt but everyone is"?

There is certainly need for better quality control of AV software. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles.

For instance, quality AV isn't open source and cannot be. But I do wish more people were doing what Tavis is doing.

And by that I mean looking for security bugs in AV; not claiming that running AV is worse than not running it, ofc.

that's only true until commodity exploitation of vulnerable AV takes place. Relies on adversary not target it

so the biggest obstacle to secure AV is claims that it isn't necessary, that insecure sec products is fine

No, it does not mean "this is fine". It means "it happens with all software". It's not good but that's how it is.

So, the conclusion seems to be less software == more secure; drop non-essentials: drop AV.

Less software is also less functionality, which people don't like. Also, AV is essential nowadays.

if insecurely dev'd AV is "won't fix" until a crisis or made redundant I hope latter comes 1st
