Well. So this happened.😀As I told @benyt, I feel charmed that I get to do this: do my best to call things as I see it regardless of considerations of popularity. It's a privilege and an honor. Much gratitude to so many who supported me for so long. 🙏https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/23/business/media/how-zeynep-tufekci-keeps-getting-the-big-things-right.html …

I don't have strong feelings about it; don't use the title much myself but there are people for whom I'd always use the title.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1297724810915647489 …

I genuinely do not use Dr. almost in any context; though I think it makes sense to use it especially for people from marginalized groups who are otherwise so quickly dismissed. I'm established enough. And I think this is NYT policy anyway outside of medical doctors.

I emailed the NYT about this. As a woman earning a PhD in robotics, I was unhappy to see you referred to without your proper title. They said that they use courtesy titles for PhD holders when it is "germane to the context of the story," which it certainly is for this article!

You're right — I am new here, and was going with the old newspaper tradition. We're changing it. Here's policy fwiw:pic.twitter.com/NFHqWLZ6Fh

Thanks, Ben. I think it's good policy going forward but less important in my case except perhaps as an example of good policy going forward.

@APStylebook reserves Dr. for people with medical degrees, but I like the more nuanced NYT style guidance. Here's a post from back in the day on the Dr. debate. https://wp.me/plJ6z-mP

Thank you for looking into this @benyt and thank you for changing it! I am also glad to know that it didn't bother you @zeynep. But I think using your title will help increase respect for both women PhDs and sociologists -- good causes!
