I have this sense that teens are super woke and worldly and creative -- the ones I know are -- but these guys are truly just a blander version of an earlier teen culture (90s MTV). Their popularity really cuts against my hopefulness.

one would hope that becoming successful outside of the incumbent Hollywood channels would mean these YouTubers are less constrained by the pressures of conformity that persist for people inside the big media companies.

but for the Pauls the opposite seems to be true, their popularity is entirely rooted in an undifferentiated, apolitical blandness. a sort of "rebel teen" archetype devoid of content.

it feels contrived, concocted by executives who sought to devise a maximally appealing and minimally offensive figure. what's so disturbing is that, we're to understand that this is the brand they CHOSE for themselves.
