I meant to write about why the Mac isn't going away, but it came out as more of an iPad piece. Telling, I suppose. http://stratechery.com/2014/specialist-mac-general-purpose-ipad/ …

@monkbent What’s the Mac’s benefit? Display size? CPU/GPU power? Input method of mouse + keyboard? OS X abilities? USB/Thunderbolt ports?

@monkbent I’d argue ports and CPU/GPU don’t or won’t matter, and any OS feature can be moved from OS X to iOS.

@marcedwards when I think of os I think of things like multiple windows and other user facing “features” that drive complexity/efficiency

@monkbent I’d suggest the line separating Mac/iPad use cases is moved by a large enough market sustaining touch optimized software/workflows

@duncanwilcox the line is dashed because it’s fluid. But there is a cost to enabling such workflows

@monkbent Where would you place Chrome OS on the simple/complex and “compute”/other things spectra? (Also: why isn’t there a ‘Chromepad’?)

@monkbent For me, the main benefits are display size + keyboard. I think multitouch is better than mouse and a new OS could replace OS X.

@monkbent Just to show what we have known for a while. Most consumers needs for computing are not that complex or in depth... Perhaps yet?

@monkbent The question is: Would the Mac be as good as a new pro + enthusiast large multitouch device with a more modern OS? I’d say no.

@monkbent also this point seems to me the core reason why OS X and iOS won’t merge.
