@monkbent@reneritchie Are you kidding? The whole point of the iPhone 5C's existence is to maximize profit at the $99 level. -
@mjsalinger@reneritchie margin, not total profit -
@monkbent@reneritchie Frankly, most of what Apple does is about maximizing profits. Cook is an ops guy after all, not a vusionary. -
@mjsalinger@monkbent@reneritchie Apple isn't choosing a strategy to maximize profits. Profit-maximizing tactics are a separate issue. -
@fpgeek@monkbent@reneritchie In some cases they are. E.g. policy on 3rd party media/subscriptions. Bad for consumer, good for profits. -
@mjsalinger@monkbent@reneritchie I disagree. Content tail isn't wagging device dog. Giving up profits to increase control / limit risk.

@monkbent nobody is making much downmarket and pursuing units at the low end would inevitably reduce sales of the higher end iPhones -
@anandabits@monkbent apple currently has 55% phone profits. I think the 5c designed to bring them back up to 65%. Big iPhone another 10%

@monkbent speculation about potential downmarket *profit* seems pretty questionable. I'm not convinced there is a lot there. units != profitThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@monkbent someone has to check the % of revenues (moreover its evolution) invested in R&D here. (this is friendly)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@monkbent isn’t the 5c exactly that, though? same specs, same price, lower materials cost = maximized profit over a $99 iPhone 5.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@monkbent In their current approach, profit is through the roof. Profit seems their only goal. (If you don't believe the best phone mantra) -
@steven_odb@monkbent they're (like many others) making profit with ... money. Hardware sales is just the river in the sea.
