Building a platform? Love your developers, and they'll build you an ecosystem.

@monkbent Once upon a time, a small software company from Redmond created an API and a platform. With dev evangelism, it created a platform. -
@getwired uh, no, I don't think so. Once upon a time, a small Redmond company licensed an OS they didn't create to IBM but kept the rights -
@getwired the users came for IBM; the developers came for the users -
@monkbent I'm not talking about DOS. I'm talking about Windows. More importantly, I'm talking about Win95, Win32, and DRG. -
@getwired I know, but those all had tons and tons of users because of DOS. The developers came for the users -
@getwired I'm not bagging at Microsoft. They played their hand brilliantly. But the users were there. More legitimate counter-argument = Mac -
@monkbent It's hard to look back now, conclusively.

@monkbent That platform created an ecosystem where many profited. But that company listened to developers. Apple stole that playbook. -
@getwired I understand your argument, but I'm pretty convinced that user base must come first -
@monkbent People don't buy devices that don't do anything. The TouchPad proved that. There were several apps pulling people to PCs early. -
@getwired iPhone disagrees ;) It is why first-party software is crucial, that's for sure. -
@monkbent True, iPhone was interesting case, given the homebrew/hacking community trying to extend it from day one.
