@monkbent Haha. I won't argue. I think he sums it up well in Footnote 3. Five vowel sounds, no tones, fewer characters - no contest, really.

@wrightak Japanese is up there. The grammar seems a lot more difficult, particularly the honorific stuff

@monkbent The grammar is more complicated but you get a handle on it more easily because you see it so often.

@wrightak speaking of "seeing it," I think the fact you don't get day-to-day reinforcement is a huge deal. You can only learn actively.

@monkbent Spaced repetition software can help with that. I also found that the kanji version of this greatly helped: http://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Simplified-Hanzi-Meaning-Characters/dp/0824833236 …

@wrightak I'll have to check that book out. I'm also an SRS fiend - started on Supermemo, now on Anki. Haven't studied in a while though :(

@monkbent I used Anki daily for several years. Very important to ruthlessly abandon the leeches.

@wrightak It's just so hard to get back on the wagon… Do you do one set with writing/reading/meaning/pronunciation or separate sets?

@monkbent I stopped using Anki a while ago. It may have changed but I used to do this with it: http://wrightak.blogspot.jp/2010/08/modification-of-rikaichan.html …

@monkbent Just decided that I was done with it. Plus, I wanted to dedicate my free time to coding so I could get into a software job.

@monkbent Yeah, similar, my boy's two years old... When I was actively studying, it was a great tool. Now my studying is passive.

@monkbent @wrightak That is awesome. Always been put off Anki by creating cards (I use the iOS app Japanese to study) but this looks good.

@pyrmont @monkbent I abandoned development of that mod pretty quickly because someone else incorporated its functionality into sth bigger.

@wrightak Oh? What's that? My studying tools are pretty primitive so I'm not familiar with very much of what's out there.
