Folks, this isn't a commentary on Word, and yes, I figured out how to find the report. It's a comment on files and file systems. Totally obtuse to anyone new to them, and why not?

Note to self: don't share interesting anecdotes about kids encountering new computer paradigms for the first time if you don't want a bunch of tweets attempting to teach you how to use a computer

This can't be true, kids don't have the concept of "quitting" apps :-)
-
I'm not sure what she did, to be honest, but she definitely made the report disappear!

Curious as to why she has to use Word now. What changed?
-
It's a study skills class and I think the point is specifically to expose them to it. They use Google Docs for everything else
-
You can learn how to use Word and still have Autosave... (Word Online)
-
She gets an A for Autosave, or an E for Erased.

It is probably autosaved somewhere I just found a draft the other day -- search for a .wbk extension from the time she closed and change it to .doc
-
yes. Thus the delayed Daily Update

-
And such an intuitive step! Makes you wonder why anyone would choose a product other than word, right?
-
Wow! So intuitive to find a .wbk file and rename it to .doc! I can't believe a kid couldn't figure it out by itself!

As a longtime Word user, I get seriously itchy watching my daughter work in Google Docs, creating a long document without ever saving it. And she gets seriously annoyed when I keep reaching over her shoulder to hit CTRL+S, telling her it's better to be safe than sorry.
-
"better *save* than sorry" :)

It’s a real and broad issue “The missing computer skills of high school students” https://nullprogram.com/blog/2018/10/31/ …
-
you but you probably don't know how to make Soap. Isthat lamentable or a benefit of technological progress? You don't need a slide rule, or knitting skills, or Word. These anachronisms are all reduced to quaint artisanal hobbies now.
-
"Yah but... "
-
Typing on a keyboard is way more efficient than finger pecking or using a cell phone. It's still an important skill.
