Now curious: as of recently, it's no longer cost-prohibitive to make our indoor environments as bright as outdoors. (A 10 m^2 room needs 100k lumens; my 30k-lumen bulb was ~$100.) Why do we settle for less? It's not like low light is pleasant.

Obviously people with official "seasonal affective disorder" figured this out a long time ago, but if 10% of Alaskans get literally depressed in the winter, what % of people do you think have some kind of sub-clinical response to light deprivation? (I'd guess a lot?)

PS: Current ultra-bright LED bulbs aren't that good (mine needs a fan for heat dissipation and has some flicker issues) but I think that's because it's intended for, like, garages and streetlights and stuff. Seems like it should be possible to make much better versions.

PPS: If you're curious, photos of my desk with and without the bulb on (with the same camera settings). Obviously my phone camera (iPhone XR) does not have the dynamic range needed to capture the real difference, but it's still pretty stark.pic.twitter.com/ofTh18agHC
