In the aftermath of 9/11, opposing the war in Afghanistan was a completely fringe idea. 17 years later, it seems like maybe not so crazy.

Yeah, I think the public opinion data at the time (not to mention my own first-person experience of talking to people) shows that opposition to the war was held by a pretty small minority of Americans at the time. (I was among them.)
