I think I understand how retweeting works but I don't understand how "liking" a tweet works.

Liking a tweet is usually more a "saved for later" like bookmarking. They can sometimes display in other people's feed if twitter likes it. Don't expect privacy. Also a good way to really see what people are reading.

I see liking a tweet to have pretty much the same functionality as it does on Facebook, especially as you ca actually save/bookmark tweets for later now. When I give a like/love, it means that I like that particular tweet. When I RT, I like it a lot
