I'll attempt it in brief. Bitcoin's protocol is set in stone and cannot be changed. However you can ADD more rules with soft forks. Nodes keep everyone honest, including miners, by acting as consumers of blocks obeying only the rules the accept. Miners supply blocks.

This is why nobody can beat Ver in a debate. He sticks to his script but its a good one because he explains things plainly to non technical users. Whereas nobody from bitcoin is able to do so or retort to Ver without resorting to name calling, smirking or just stammering.
