This is why we need ! They aim to: • address weaknesses with standard preregistration • guard against Questionable Research Practices • mitigate publication bias • improve research quality Here's a 25min intro by : youtube.com/watch?v=cEu7oG

“Nearly 100% of published studies… confirm the initial hypothesis. This is an amazing accomplishment given the complexity of the human mind and human behaviour. Somehow, as psychological scientists, we always find the expected result; we always win!” royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs

Our Small Grants scheme has opened. We are doing a 3 year trial of partial randomised assessment, because we receive so many good applications. Awards will be allocated randomly between those applications that meet our quality threshold

"a journal’s impact factor is “a bad predictor for the quality of review of an individual manuscript”." I am of course not shocked by this, but I do hope the wider academic populace would understand and embrace this. High JIF journals dont necessarily provide better peer review.

A intriguing preprint using AI to try to measure the 'thoroughness' and 'helpfulness' of 10,000 peer-review reports came out in July: I talked to author @annasvrn about it + other efforts to study peer-review at vast scale. | @nature nature.com/articles/d4158

The power of in action: 1. Submit Stage 1 to us for peer review 2. If recommended, Stage 1 is automatically accepted in principle by PCI RR-friendly journals 3. Do study 4. Submit Stage 2 to us. Once recommended, choose journal for immediate acceptance

I wrote about doing my first ever "Registered Report" (led by ), how it's OBVIOUSLY the best way to do science, and how my new opinion is that you should have to explain why you *didn't* do a Registered Report for any given study:

NEW from Works in Progress – a Substack diary series giving a first-person perspective on some of the research that our authors are doing. First up, it’s @StuartJRitchie on “Doing science backwards”, or how pre-registration of research can cure bias. worksinprogress.substack.com/p/notes-on-pro

"A consultant psychiatrist... said: “I don’t think anyone believes that headaches are caused by not enough paracetamol in the brain" Yeah but paracetamol manufacturers did not spend decades pushing that line, as opposed to the case with antidepressants. theguardian.com/society/2022/j

This thread highlights 1) why preregistration is extremely useful for detecting bias & 2) why it isn’t sufficient for preventing it Only Registered Reports can actually prevent reporting bias At some point i hope something clicks & become the norm in clin trials

This seems a bit fishy. The graph of change in the primary outcome shows that real separation between pimavanserin and placebo occurs ONLY at Day 43 (6 weeks). Seems convenient that this is the primary outcome date. Were they geniuses, or was that time point cherry-picked? twitter.com/eturnermd1/sta…

"…when the final data and analysis are complete. would combat the tendency to publish papers with greater potential for publicity and clicks because publication would revolve not around the outcome but around the process."

"One change…is to implement a system of which involve peer review and acceptance of a study's design, methodology, & statistical plan before data are collected and regardless of what the data ultimately suggest. These reports would be pre-accepted for publication…"
