But a cishet dude cranking out books with content similar to Whedon's would be (correctly) raked over the coals on book twitter or what have you, because books have a much lower barrier to entry so there are more books by women and less need to lick men's boots.

The bar in 1997 was also even lower than it is now. "Having a woman protagonist, and several powerful woman supporting characters" in itself was enough for some to consider it great feminist rep. Not that people at the time didn't see how sketchy his portrayals were.

"He doesn't get it all right, but he's trying and it's important visibility!" Doesn't even feel especially wrong for the time in hindsight. The world really is a becoming a better place overall. We SEE more of the trash, with a camera in every phone; but that lets us fight it.
