You start learning it by 5 or 7. White monoglots don't grasp this because they have the luxury of being monoglots.

English isn't difficult especially because you're exposed to it constantly and most likely need to speak it a lot to communicate on the internet.

My other favorite thing is that white monoglots who want to argue about this really really hate admitting they're wrong or that they don't have as much linguistic experience as MULTILINGUAL PEOPLE FROM ASIA might.

All I know is that in my Swedish for Immigrants classes, something like 3/4ths of folks there from all the over the globe spoke English at *least* understandably. Even if it's hard cognitively as an adult, it's the lingua franca of money/power, which makes it easier.

I recall Finland has Swedish as an official language (aside from Finnish,) with all the “proper” schools and gymnasiums teaching it, and yet more people speak English than Swedish.

I think a big factor is that standard American education (not sure about the other anglophone countries) is like "you have to study a second language for three years starting at twelve or so but if you just fail for three years that's fine" and the curriculum is based on that.

This chick claims Japanese, which she's trying to learn, is 'relatively straightforward'. I'll bet a lot that her Japanese fluency is dogshit.

It's like Eddie Izzard said, "Two languages at once? Who can think at that speed?" Seriously though it's culturally ingrained, at least in the US. They barely teach other languages in high school and you have to actively choose to learn languages in college or uni.

Hopefully apps like DuoLingo will change that.

I've never really understood that perception lol. Like, yeah, we've got some weird spelling/grammar rules for some words that aren't intuitive, but don't most languages? I started French 21 years ago and I still struggle with the verb tenses.

A lot of them try to learn a non-English language and, because at that point they have a toddler's fluency, believe the language in question is so easy.
