He is a strident and ideological conservative but he is also a very fine lawyer and someone who I think would make judgments on the merits.

He also served at the department with Mueller. Barr would not be my choice and this is by no means an endorsement, but I don't think this is an outcome that would spell doom for either the department's norms and traditions or for the Muller investigation.

And having a person of Barr's stature go before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a serious confirmation process is a HELL of a lot better than having the incumbent AAG remain in place.

This is another of Ben’s really horrible takes on noninees. His track record there is.....kinda abysmal.

They are people he "knows" so I think he has some personal bias here that prevents him from seeing the bigger picture.

Given some of Trump’s other personnel decisions, it’s a surprise he’s picked someone so experienced, although there are concerning red flags. The gravitational pull of DOJ’s tradition is strong & someone with Barr’s history should find it hard to ignore the force of those tides.
-
At this point, it’s fair to say that any person Trump selects will have some degree of corruption, cruelty, and/or intellectually dishonesty in their background—traits that appeal to him. He hopes that person will use those ugly traits to protect him. Trump is all about Trump.

If you ignore all the times he's acted as a Republican apparatchik, yeah.

it seems pretty likely that Trump just heard people talking this week about how HW got away with the pardons related to that era's special counsel, found out Barr was the AG who ran that process, and decided he wanted to appoint him, no?

He was AG when Bush pardoned six people in connection with the Iran-Contra Affair. Is that not a red flag?
-
Does that matter? I don’t think Trump has consulted with the DOJ on any pardons yet and the AG can’t do anything about them for better or worse as far as I know.
-
It's a sign of his judgment and his moral/legal compass. Bush *did* consult Barr before pardoning people in connection with Iran-Contra -- and (apparently) received no pushback. https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/big/1224.html …
