This may be useful, given the number of bot attacks going on right now:

It'll be worth watching for the likely Kremlin / troll pushback on this. - Try to dismiss ("warmongers" etc) - Distort the article - Distract by accusing of denying war crimes - Dismay by threatening legal action.

Fascinating to watch these operations unfold. Look for the moment in July 2014 when the Russian IRA spiked in activity, accusing Ukraine of downing MH17.

Also worth noting that mentions of Jeff Bezos himself don't appear to be dominated by pro-Saudi sentiment - much more traffic around the reporting of the hack itself.

Quick update: current traffic totals 14.3k posts as of a couple of minutes ago, and trending downwards. That's a relatively modest flow: Saud al-Qahtani was able to get more retweets than that on his own, back in 2017.

This reminds me a lot of the pro-Saudi traffic against Qatar in summer 2017 - political hashtags mainly driven by one user ( back in the day) and boosted by a mix of real users and probable bots. Writeup for at here:

Overall, the traffic scores a Coefficient of Traffic Manipulation of 25.5. (66% retweets + 16.6% traffic from top 50 + 2.3 tweets per user) That's above normal organic ranges (typically 12 or lower) but well below the more egregious campaigns (35+).

... here's the behaviour pattern over the past few months. Definitely some curious amplification patterns here.

And here's yet another driver. Over 60 tweets on the hashtag this morning, amidst other traffic. Over 90% retweets. That's not conclusive in itself, but...

Again, he doesn't seem to get much time off. Nor does his iPhone.

Here's another busy tweeter. The second most active on the hashtag, and almost all his recent posts are retweets.

The 50 most active accounts on the Arabic and English hashtags contributed just over 1,400 tweets, so about 1/6 of all the traffic. This was the most active (scan per ).

This is by far the main driver - it tweeted all ten of the most-retweeted posts, and retweets of those posts contributed over 1/3 of all traffic.

Ultimately, the win for this hashtag was the Trump retweet, moving it out of Iranian-activist circles to a much bigger audience. It's a case study in why influence ops target high-profile amplifiers. Something for all parties to bear in mind as the 2020 election nears.

Calculating the coefficient of traffic manipulation for the first 50k tweets, it scored 18.5. That indicates some attempt at manipulation, but not massive. scored 45.6. Far more heavily gamed. (CTM here, h/t : )

Incidentally, that meme was posted on Reddit on Jan 6. Attributed to Facebook, but no link given. Anyone seen the original?

But it took off after Trump retweeted six posts with the hashtag, lending it his 70 million followers. For any influence operation, getting a high-profile amplifier is a major win.

Some of the early drivers in both languages were hyper-tweeting, 150-300 posts each. Today was not an isolated case. Some of the same accounts heavily pushed (Jan 6) and (Jan 11), with hundreds of posts each. (h/t )
