But at the same time this question sort of feels like, “What cool things on the horizon are inhibited by stupid limitations of the present?” USB-C kinda feels like one of those things.

All of the solutions for keys and security issues I can think of are almost inherently centralized (or rely on centralization), stuff that’s Really Good like Touch ID and Face ID

Which I think is fine for most people. There will be network nodes that we trust more than others. Apple has positioned themselves well to be one. At least we'll have the option of not trusting centralized orgs, thats a win.
