Take any class online, or even just watch a few well-done series of videos on a topic, and you’ll realize the traditional higher education system is doomed (as it should be).

College classes are like business books...they’re filled with fluff simply because they have to fill a certain amount of time and create the perception of value. I’d love to know if a single career path that actually necessitates the current higher education structure.

Yes, I know lots of employers unfortunately require a degree, but what skills actually benefit from the structure of a traditional degree?

I think of the medical field and how I’m thankful there’s a high barrier to actually completing the coursework, but the format of 10 years of education even for that seems...unnecessary.

Nearly every field changes so incredibly quickly that no university can possibly keep up and actually stay relevant.

As my children get older (with my oldest only a few years away from graduating high school) I’m having a really difficult time finding a single scenario where I’d encourage them to go to college.

Seems much wiser and economical to encourage things like internships, apprenticeships or just giving them each a small amount of cash to help them start something.

I know every field is different, so my background in design is obviously different than someone in say psychology or medicine, but really...why do people keep spending $10s or $100s of thousands of dollars to get degrees?

The weird thing is feels like most people know this, know it’s going to change at some point, but don’t know what to do about it. Myself included
