they'd be both pretty negligible: paper towel is recycled waste bark from the lumber industry and a dishwasher uses like, 4 gallons of water per cycle which is ~2 minutes of showering (and your marginal extra dish is some fraction of that, etc)

Dirtying and washing a plate is roughly zero energy (dishwashers are extremely efficient). With paper towels, you have to consider the cost of manufacturing, shipping, and disposal.
