I have a math intuition I've struggled with my whole life and would be very indebted if someone could help me think clearly about this. I currently think about it as "intervals" vs "indices". (thread)

I have this problem also. I don't have a good way to intuit it on the first try, but I reduce the size of the numbers down to something where it's obvious, then guess and check which calculation to do. In practice it only takes a second or two longer than getting it right in one.

Interesting! Might try this

I screw up the pool ball thing too, and what helps me think about it is that when you say 6+4=10, you're leaving out the six ball and starting your count with 7 (ie, "1"). The 6 and 10 balls don't represent the numbers 6 and 10. They're just two balls that both need to be counted

Yeah totally. Maybe it’s just a matter of practice

Haha, same here. This is basically a summary of what you already said but.. it's a pretty common problem to have apparently: https://betterexplained.com/articles/learning-how-to-count-avoiding-the-fencepost-problem/ …

Oh man this looks like exactly it! Excited to dig in and see if I can find something new :D

You may find the concept of closed sets to be helpful. There are five pool balls including the endpoints 6 and 10. Monday is the third day after Friday inclusively.

This reminds me of the Fencepost Error https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-by-one_error …
