The Apple/Google contact tracing system uses a global standard identifier, but siloed national databases. So, if French person a sits next to German person b and b then tests positive, b’s phone will tell the German database by A’s phone will only check the French database.

I would guess we have to think about a world in which we need to do contract tracing while people start to travel. So you can’t just check your national database - You need some way to check others.

But the Apple/Google system relies on every phone periodically downloading a list of every exposed beacon. is it practical to do that globally? how many beacons is that?

This winter I get on the Eurostar to Paris, and I have lunch sitting next to a Spaniard and a German. We’re all using Apple’s tracking system, and we all go home, and one of us discovers they were infected. What ‘National health provider’ app is going to tell all of us that?

Maybe even though I’m British and have the British app, I should also install the French app and when I get a positive test I should tell both of those. but the French app is in French and it’s not in the UK App Store, and the French app can’t validate my UK test. 🚫

Occam’s Razor says you have to connect all of the national tracking databases together so that my phone downloads all global infected beacons (how big a file is that?!), or at least for the countries that I’ve been in - EXCEPT it’s not supposed to be collecting location at all.

Good point. Global contact tracing seems like a pipe dream. Guess international travel will involve testing and temperature checks going forward similar to what Emirates is doing.
