Outside some very narrow and specific use cases, there’s no reason to be any more excited about 5G than there was about 4G. I don’t even remember who ‘won’ 4G - Japan won 3G by a long way and it didn’t matter at all.

Meanwhile people tout around the most ludicrous ‘5G use cases’. No, it’s not part of autonomous cars - every major project presume the car works with no connection. No, not remote surgery - the fibre in the building is much better (and 5G speeds don’t work through concrete walls)

There IS a legitimate conversation about the geopolitical role of China, and what it means that the leading infrastructure supplier for the next generation of mobile is a Chinese company. But, that matters because mobile matters, not because 5G changes things in some radical way.

Maybe not for mobile, but sure seems interesting and important for home service.

It competes with fibre, but only in some very narrow geographies. Lots of skepticism in the industry that mmWave will be practical at all.

I have a gigabit fiber line to the house and WiFi6 now. What has that meant so far? Twitter is a little faster. Zoom a little more reliable. We got rid of cable but now watch more TV and movies. Uploading video is where biggest gains were.

Having 600 mbps makes my house 100x faster than LTE. Nuts. More bandwidth than I can use. I do recommend it if you can get it.

- Most mobile telephony only goes to 4, but these go to 5. > But, why don’t you make 4 a little faster and make 4 the fastest one? - … > … - these go to 5.
