We don’t want irrelevant ads or ads that are too relevant. We don’t want anyone to know what we bought but we want the advertiser to know we already bought that. And we refuse (mostly) to pay but we don’t really want ads anyway. Our feelings about online ads are pretty unresolved

(This is distinct from the small number of people who object to any advertising at all - the fruitarians of media)

I’ve been clicking ‘Hide Ad/Not Relevant’ on every Instagram ad for a few months and the ads I now get are amazing and mad, somewhere between Innovations catalogue and local newspaper classifieds

No. We don’t care if ads are relevant. We don’t want anyone to know what we buy. We’re happy with a mix of paying and ads if the experience and content are decent and we maintain our privacy. This isn’t difficult to understand or solve. See newspapers, magazines, cable TV.

The last 20 years demonstrates that people will not pay for the vast majority of the media they consume online

People will use what's available. If good service is free, they'll use it. If better service costs, they'll pay. See how many people are paying Netflix (and *enjoying* that they don't insert ads).

Not included here is the willingness to pay to not deal with ads. Netflix vs TV. Once you experience ad-less shows, anything less is completely intolerable. Same with Spotify.

The great thing about markets and competition is that the products available to us reflect the products we want. Given the prevalence of ads, I think it’s safe to say people like ad supported business models

Nothing is stopping a non-ad based business from existing. If a strong preference for that point of differentiation existed, a company serving it would too

Exactly! Some people don’t like ads and there’s a product for it. Over a billion other people like the model that has ads. Lots of people like ads

As I was suggesting earlier "liking" is not the same as "not yet having found as easy a path to extract yourself from a networked service as it was to become enrolled". Tolerate != like
