It irks me to see people equate writing happy stories with kindness. Does that mean that authors with depression who express their unhappy feelings in fiction are unkind? Would it be "kinder" for them to censor themselves and suffer in silence?

Is it kind to dismiss sincere expressive writing by people with depression as "grimdark"? Is it kind to imply that artists who have depression are somehow making the world worse by speaking their truth?

IMO horror, a bleak genre, is incredibly compassionate and kind. It allows characters to be flawed. It allows characters to be broken or scarred in some way. Characters don't have to be perfect amazing winners. Surviving is enough.

To me, it's kinder to say that failures and losers and people who don't escape the horrors of oppression are still worthy of having their stories told, still worthy of love and compassion. Erasing their stories, which is what hopepunk preaches, is not kindness.
