If you remotely value your professional growth, buy a copy of “The Great CEO Within” for yourself and every person you know. Easily worth 1,000x it’s price. This book alone will accelerate global GDP growth by multiple % points.

Isn't it great how if you're a weird outcast* you can now find love and acceptance and community? * as long as you fit into one of the seven officially approved ways of being a weird outcast. Otherwise please fuck off and stop bothering the legitimate weirdos.

#2 fails a basic math check, as halving infant mortality to take it below Western Europe would boost life expectancy by 3 months. These things also fail to explain why the US has been growing slower.

My pinko wife is having a bit of a sulk about my voting intentions. Fortunately I've bought her a Peleton for Christmas, so that should put everything right.

If we had good infrastructure to support this it would be a lot more common. Its fashionable for SV Twitter people to say stuff like this, but ultimately they aren't the ones who will have to bear the consequences of your decision.

And this was when there was no more room for doubt that Paul Graham had sold out reason for bad-faith defenses of unreflectively assessed class-interest.

"Oh, I could never be a SAHM, I don't do well without structure." "What if a husband imposed some?" "What do you think I am, a little girl?" "You've already established that you need a Daddy. Now we're just haggling over whether it's capital or me."

Conclusion: If this book is what happens when does a round of layoffs, maybe they should do them more often. This is a great introduction to AI risk and Rationalists, so if you're curious about either, I'd recommend this book.

The talk at : Summarising AI risk to an unfamiliar audience in 45 minutes is really difficult. The fact that is nice/reasonable/respectable is usually a good thing, but it doesn't do any favours if you have to present a weird idea without flinching.

Personal nitpicks: Chivers is a journalist and has relied on a few tropes of the trade. As such, some chapters feel like a really long Guardian article.

Things I liked: The Rationalists are really easy to mock, yet he took them on their merits and avoids cheap shots. The book is both approachable and refreshingly British. Complicated ideas are broken down and there's a comparison to the NHS that had never occurred to me.
