But "an expert in moderating" has what skill set? (beyond being a non-expert) Presumably, doesn't need the expert's discipline. Include obvious skills like facilitating, listening, can translate to a (more) lay audience... Those suggest mere disciplined experts are'nt the best
Who's the ideal moderator of a roundtable session? Someone who's expert in the topic AND disciplined enough to not turn the session into a Q&A with him/herself. Very rare.
So second best is a moderator who's NOT a topical expert but rather an expert in moderating. (cc: @auren)

Yeah there's a whole set of skills that great moderators have. Keeping the convo flowing, calling on people who may be quieter, cutting people off who are talking too much, switching topics if it's become a bore, wrapping up on time, etc.

I've always felt that a moderator should think of him/her/itself as a pure point guard--the goal is to set up teammates, not score yourself.
