What do crossword people think about homophones of non-words or word fragments? E.g. if I clued OSLO with the SLO bit as a homophone of 'slow'.

Yeah - the solver in me has already voted for fine in moderation but the English teacher in me feels a little "upset" especially if the second syllable is the final letter of the alphabet, we hear.
