I am scoring The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. I am thrilled to musically guide audiences through major events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth & honored to score a series featuring a majestic main title by Howard Shore

OMG, this is a first. Our kid fell asleep. On our cat. I was amazed how long this lasted.🤣 Anybody else have a pet that will tolerate this?

So… who’s gonna give these extended episodic albums a listen? What’s your favorite moment in the new material? Is there anything here you wish made the cut on the first album? 💍🎶🔥🤘🏼🐻

But if you’re more like me — a hardcore fan of film scores, #TheLordOfTheRings, Tolkien, or are simply curious about how music shapes to narrative drama — the episode specific albums might be for you. If you’re willing to embark, an eight-hour musical journey awaits!

Not gonna lie… I would recommend casual fans stick to the main Season One Soundtrack Album. At 2.5 hours, even that “shorter” album is massive, if not overwhelming. If you’re looking for an efficient, beautiful overview of the #LOTR score, I made that record for you!

If a track has a unique name, it’s more than 50% unreleased material. If the name shares keywords from a previous track, it includes less than 50% new material. (“The Boat and The Crater” for example.) If a track name is identical, the music is identical. (Very few of these)

Most music represented on the primary soundtrack album will re-appear somewhere on these episodic albums, though in a greatly altered or expanded form. So… how can you tell what’s different on these episodic albums?

For the episodic albums, you get a playlist much closer to the narrative arc of each episode. Virtually every second of score is here. Some cues have been combined into suites to create continuous musical tracks (keeping Harfoot cues together, Elven cues together, and so on).

For the main “Season One” album, I recut, and even rewrote & re-recorded, much of the music to create an emotional listening experience that captures the season’s narrative arc in a symphonic format.

I also met John Howe, one of the artists who has shaped our collective visual language associated with Tolkien’s writings. I told him how much musical inspiration I’ve drawn from staring at his images. What an honor to collaborate with this man!

We shocked the afterparty crowd with a surprise performance! I wrote a custom suite of my #LOTR themes for a massive 10-piece percussion ensemble, full choir, and the stunning Sandy Cameron on violin. We shook the walls of the British Museum! 🤘🏼❤️🎶

Well….. I also did a game called Dark Void, which was the first time I tried a big symphonic melody ala Elmer Bernstein. Oh and Human Target, where I learned how to write symphonic music on a weekly basis. That crash course made LOTR’s crushing schedule possible.

Damn, you’re right. Yes, gotta include Da Vinci’s Demons on that list. It was my first “historical epic” I cut my teeth on. And Cloverfield Paradox is where I upped my game for orchestral writing. Learned SO MUCH on that score. But there. That’s the list.

Welcome new followers! 🤓 If you want to hear where my LOTR mood started, check out God of War. Or Outlander. Or Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Or Black Sails. Or Battlestar Galactica (season 2 is a good album to start with). Or Godzilla. Or 10 Cloverfield Lane. Or……….

@bearmccreary I did not know your music before Rings of Power. What are your top two favorite scores of yours before Rings? Thanks.

My love of @bearmccreary music is often that for all the flashy technique / elaborate recording, the underlying core (the NOTES!) is always solid. Few folks really do themes well. And this is a great one; very "classic." One foot in the traditions of old. youtube.com/watch?v=oLmWhM

As you said, I like to make themes crystal clear! Interesting and thorough analysis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and enthusiasm. HINT: there are at least 2 other primary score themes on the record you missed. Maybe give “Nampat” and “The Mystics” another listen… 😉
