What’s the right way to conceptualize the marginal social cost of taking a flight (I’m thinking in terms of carbon emissions)? Whether or not I decide to take a flight it’s likely the flight will still take place.

Loving this question for obvious reasons. I think Brian is right. It’s a bit of the tragedy of the commons. Your action won’t make a difference but if enough people like you do, then demand will be affected - eventually.

I think expected marginal cost is a good first approximation, though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yield_management#Airlines … claims (without references...) that airlines' scheduling is not super responsive to route demand, at least in the short run.
