the pmtiles hilbert ID scheme lets extract multipolygons be represented as two sets of 64-bit integers: one set for the boundary, and one for the interior, which compresses millions of Z/X/Y coordinates into single runlengths on the curve (colors)

multipolygons also mandatory for real tasks like
"make a map of France including overseas départements"
"overlay this data on all 50 US states but don't include Canada or too much ocean"

turns out the simple use case for polygons should still be built on multipolygons to handle the antimeridian

prototyping `pmtiles extract` - given a big tile archive, efficiently extract any multipolygon area into a smaller archive
creating progressively more difficult areas via 's excellent union/subtract operations...

New Tippecanoe version (2.17) at github.com/felt/tippecanoe adds first-class support for writing and reading PMTiles.
Convert GeoJSON datasets, then visualize in the browser with the drag-and-drop viewer: protomaps.github.io/PMTiles/
no databases or running servers necessary!

I haven't checked in on the harp.gl WebGL vector tile renderer in a while, but it looks like it's either stopped development or gone closed source:
github.com/heremaps/harp.
Without harp/tangram is the only open source WebGL option left?

Here's one more thing to help you build 100% static file map applications - a useful complement to loading tile archives in MapLibre GL
Runs client side on your local font .ttfs via WebAssembly/Emscripten!
