List of open problems please?
There is a regrettable idea that system software is "done." I was told the same thing in 1996 (and in the same breath, advised to not pursue system software). So for whomever needs to hear it: system software was not done then -- and it is emphatically not done now!

I’d say there are two: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-1 errors.

I had a similar moment coming out of college. Looking around it seemed that so much progress had been made in web, os, and cryptography. As a dev, I was worried that improvements would only exist at the margin

Thankfully, that was all wrong and after 15 years I cannot think of any area that seems mature enough to call done!

people just stop paying to update it. i think this is the problem with relying on something that's not open-sourced. in government contracts, you always have some component that nobody has a charge code to update; but everybody depends on it; and environment around it changes.

System software has consistently moved further and further away from being done, for any sensible definition of "done".

Indeed, my first step in finishing system software would be to delete 95% of it.
