  4. Mass surveillance needs mass resistance. Face paint isn’t it... 😬 Activists in Hong Kong showed how it’s done - MASKS, umbrellas, laser pointers. Expect more of these. ✌️

  5. We sincerely hope Trade Minister used his meeting with to convey his deep concern on the alleged use of their technology in mass surveillance operations & ethnic persecution in China. However, we doubt it.

London is implementing facial recognition without public consultation, a legislative framework or judicial oversight, endangering our civil liberties and the rule of law. What a disturbing example to set for the world. My latest for :

Big Brother Watch’s Silkie Carlo says cameras watching the public is “heading down that road to a surveillance state” “Some of the signposting is not very noticeable, but the time you have seen it you will already have been scanned”

  9. NEWS: We found police giving private landlords photos for live facial recognition at Meadowhall shopping centre. The Met's roll out will be a green light for dodgy companies + police data sharing deals everywhere. This needs to be urgently stopped.

  10. . says we should judge facial recognition by its results. But doesn't seem willing to judge it by the disastrous results it has produced over the last four years..!

  11. . asks, does he not agree with the independent review of the Met's facial recognition? 93% inaccuracy? . responds talking about the ICO. He doesn't appear to know about the completely damning independent review...

  12. Urgent question in parliament right *now*: asks Policing Minister to explain the decision to roll out facial recognition surveillance across London. The Minister says the Government supports facial recognition surveillance within the law. What law?

  16. We’ve joined with to bring a legal challenge against the Met Police & Home Office use of facial recognition surveillance. Baroness Jones, a peer, was classed a “domestic extremist” by police, who collected intelligence on her just for being an environmentalist.

  17. Looking at the bigger picture - there are 19 million photos on the police national database. Around 13 million are biometrically searchable. Hundreds of thousands, in fact likely 1m+, are of innocent people. The Home Office says it would take too long to delete all the photos 🤔

  18. When facial recognition creates an ‘alert’, 93% of those alerts are innocent people misidentified (Met police figures 2016-19). They put those photos on a database anyway (!) and promise to delete them in 30 days. Originally, it was a year. Thousands were stored.

  19. Police already rolled up in a facial recognition van 🤢 to a pro-peace, anti-arms demo. Our FOI found innocent people were on the watch list for “intelligence” 🤔 Police have monitored + infiltrated peaceful activist groups for years. Of course they’ll use FR against them too.

  20. In this rightly worries about a future scenario in which political dissenters are scanned with facial recognition on protests and innocent people’s data gets mixed up with criminals on police databases. Bad news: it’s already happening... THREAD
