Science peeps: are there any computer skills that you wished you'd learned as a student that you use a lot in your research? common (but unusual) file formats, numerical techniques of particular effectiveness, automation, etc.? Collecting ideas for a course I'm teaching. thx.

Reading about medieval communes: "According to Adalberon, society was composed of the three orders: those who fight (the nobles), those who pray (the clergy) and those who work (the peasants)." Sounds familiar...

In we have "There are two forms of evidence: direct evidence (eyewitness testimony) and indirect evidence (everything else)." Direct physical evidence seems to be overlooked?

Good advice. Another presentation tip: if you’re running out of time don’t just speak faster and fly through. Skip slides instead and don’t comment that you’re skipping them.

What a fun discussion we had! If only we had enough time to explore some things in more detail. Travis definitely gave me things to keep thinking about. Thanks!

If you don't like the word skepticism, that's fine, because we can always fall back on probability - a bit more cumbersome and formal, but perhaps less easily misunderstood. 9/9

...but then we find that the rule-of-thumb is a shorthand for a particular probabilistic procedure supported by the math and need not be applied indiscriminately - one uses the rules of probability to apply it. 8/9

Thus, it makes no sense to be "skeptical of skepticism" because we're simply labeling probabilities. Or, perhaps one could say that when *first* hearing the word skepticism as a rule-of-thumb (e.g. question everything) one could be skeptical... 7/9

If you lack that information then a large probability (or, equivalently a small probability) is unjustified and implies you have more information than you have. The term "skepticism" is just the short-hand label we give to this mathematical fact. 6/9

Thus, to say "I know something" implies having a large probability for that thing which implies (by the rules of probability) having enough information to justify that large probability. 5/9

As such you can have degrees of knowledge and the line between what we might label "simply belief" and what we'd label "knowledge" is not sharp. This doesn't pose any problems, but it is stated here to be clear. 4/9
