As a self-employed tradesman earning £40 per hour and working 8 hour days everyday of a 253 working day year he'd earn £80,960. He'd therefore be paying higher rate tax on £960. He would end up paying £432 in tax on that income instead of the £384 he's presumably paying now.

Yes exactly that. Good bit of actual facts. And frankly people over £50k should pay more. That is double the average and would be my starting point. Maybe £33k even. Very wealthy though need to pay a lot more.

The big difference he won't benefit directly from that. Other people will. A lot of people mid 40 plus will have benefitted from a free education and are at the level they are at because of it. I won't use the word selfish but many would
