Any vets out there who want to comment on @MORETHAN insurance's claim that "vets fees have tripled in past year" to justify its excessive premium hikes?

I always feel the prices seem to go up in-line with what the insurance companies are willing to pay. I.e the inflation is caused by vets pushing their luck over and over. So when you aren't insured, you're paying a lot. Just a feeling, nothing to back it up.

I'm not sure it has much to do with vet fee inflation at all. More to do with insurance companies trying to lock in time-short customers who don't notice premium hikes. Bet it accounts for high percentage of customers.

Having seen your previous tweet now, I think you're probably right. Have you ever claimed on your insurance? When I run the numbers on my three elderly cats - it just wasn't worth it.

I had to claim when my cat developed a urinary tract infection - the payout more than covered the premiums I've been paying for the last decade and a bit, several times over.

My cat had a UTI last week and it was just a cheap shot of antibiotics. Certainly wouldn't have been able to claim it - I'd be interested in the numbers there!

This was "if this doesn't work, time to put him down" seriousness. Off the top of my head, the bills hit around the £5K mark after the second hospitalisation - of which I had to pay 10%, I think. (Actual figures may vary, it was a while back.) He's fine now!

From memory - I think it was £100 excess plus 30%. So at your costs, £1600. So even with insurance, I'd draw the line on an elderly one. How old is yours? I hope she's recovered well?

Not sure - north of a decade, certainly. He's absolutely fine now. (Well, he threw up a bit on the floor earlier today, but that's par for the course, really.)

This is what happens every year. My feed turns into a stream of 'why do you do it?' and animal horror stories :)
