Many managers feels players have to earn a place on the bench, rather than get it due to circumstances dictating lack of options. Won't mean much to a player knowing he is there just as a undeserved stopgap.

How can giving a kid the experience of being on a bench and observing the match day routine/atmosphere be in any way detrimental?
-
It needs to be earned though,if not it can easily have a detrimental effect - the kid could think it is easy to make it/not have to work so hard or it goes to his http://head.No player is going to feel disrespected at City for yesterday, they will just want to work harder

Ludicrous ‘point’, presumably made to City board. Great experience to be on the bench, see how a game unfolds. Silly games

He is hardly alone in doing this either. Just the other week Karl Robinson only named 3 subs as injuries meant no options bar literally the youth team, who hadn't earned the opportunity yet (important part for any player is earning their place in any squad).
