Why do melons have so many seeds? What are they trying to prove?

It's all a numbers game. They're reliant on animals eating the seeds and pooping them back out again. Risky.
-
Melons want to evolve. There's not too many beasts wandering around the Tesco aisles. Unless you count the Saturday lads.
-
Melons are doing alright in the evolution game ... big winners though are grasses. Major life form on planet now we cultivate them.
