Honestly Descartes is pretty uninteresting if you don't really buy into the doubt (Of course there is an external world etc). I liked Plato a lot more.

If you don't buy into the doubt, that's exactly the type of people Descartes would appeal to. His whole project is showing why skepticism fails.

I would also suggest to anyone new to Philosophy Michael Sandel's Justice: What Is The Right Thing To Do? In an age of instrumental reason, illustrating concrete examples of moral philosophy in action is a sure fire hook.
