Hot take: I suspect Julián Castro has been both helped & hurt by subconscious comparisons to Matt Santos. Political elites were so eager for a real-life Santos in 2012, but there was no way Castro was ever going to live up to a literal Hollywood ideal.

The impact of the West Wing on our politics as actually practiced is utterly pernicious. So many people going to work in DC expecting that to be how politics actually works- because you can binge watch West Wing. while reading Robert Caro takes time and effort.

Ok , did not know who that was. Enlightened by the comments. Guessing that the WW fans that would remember this person are older Millennials?

Hot take: he has no experience. He was secretary of HUD for a couple of years. Before that? He made $4k/year as a ceremonial ribbon-cutter in San Antonio. He literally has [almost]no experience whatsoever.

The Obama-Santos comparisons were popular in 2007-2008. It was just in a pre-meme, pre-Twitter world.

I mean, mayor of San Antonio, mayor of Houston. HOW DID THEY KNOW?! Back in like 2004- when they wrote that character- that a real one would emerge??! and how did we all stay so naive to think a Sorkin story could become real life?
